September movie releases include what is likely Robert Redford’s last movie, “The Old Man and The Gun,” psychological thriller, “A Simple Favor”, and a wide variety of genres of movies.
This list is as complete as possible, but any given movie’s release schedule is subject to change, and movies with limited release may not make it to Raleigh in September. Nonetheless, there are several limited release movies worth looking out for in the future on Netflix and other carriers.
Raleigh Citizen will publish October, November, and December releases in the near future.
A Simple Favor
Anna Kendrick stars as Stephanie, a widow who tries to solve the disappearance of her best friend Emily (Blake Lively), with help from Emily’s husband Sean (Henry Golding). “A Simple Favor” is directed and co-written by Paul Feig (“Bridesmaids” and “Ghostbusters”), and adapted from the debut novel by Darcey Bell.
Assassination Nation (Limited Release)
“Imagine if the comments section came alive and tried to kill everyone you know and love” is how writer-director Sam Levinson summed-up the horror satire “Assassination Nation.” Odessa Young stars as Lily, a teenager in Salem, a small town that is struck by a hacker who reveals everyone’s personal information. When Salem erupts in violence, Lily and her friends band together to survive.
Bad Reputation (Limited Release)
The authorized documentary of Joan Jett follows her from getting her first guitar at age 13, to the founding of the Runaways, and through her music career. “Bad Reputation” mixes vintage footage, commentary from Jett and her frequent collaborator Kenny Laguna, as well as other musicians who she has inspired.
Bisbee ’17 (Limited Release)
In 1917, a deputized posse in the town of mining town Bisbee, Arizona arrested over 1,000 migrant workers, loaded them onto cattle cars without food or water, and deported them on a 16 hour journey to Tres Hermanas, New Mexico. Documentary filmmaker Robert Greene get the townspeople of Bisbee, Arizona to recreate the Bisbee Deportation.
The Children Act (Limited Release)
Emma Thompson stars in “The Children Act” as the presiding judge in a case of a boy who is refusing, because of his and his parents’ religious beliefs, a blood transfusion which would save his life.
Colette (Limited Release)
“Colette” is based upon the life of the French novelist Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette. Keira Knightley stars as the talented author who ghostwrites for her husband, French author Henry Gauthier-Villars, to great success.
Final Score
A retired soldier fights to save his niece when terrorists seize her at a soccer match. Dave Bautista stars with Pierce Brosnan.
Hal (Limited Release)
The documentary “Hal” follows the career of Hal Ashby, film director of a number of 1970s classics: “Harold & Maude;” “The Last Detail;” “Shampoo;” “Coming Home;” “Bound for Glory;” and “Being There.” Due to an unfortunate mix of bad luck, clashes with the Hollywood powers that be, and self-destructive behavior, Ashby’s career declined in the 1980s.
Hell Fest
An amusement park becomes a killing ground for a masked serial killer.
The House with a Clock in Its Walls
Eli Roth directs “The House with a Clock in Its Walls,” an adaptation of the gothic horror children’s novel by John Bellairs. Lewis, a 10-year-old boy goes to live with his uncle, a kind warlock. The cast includes Owen Vaccaro, Jack Black, Cate Blanchett, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Sunny Suljic, and Kyle MacLachlan.
I Am Not a Witch (Limited Release)
“I Am Not a Witch” is about a young girl in Zambia who is accused of being a witch, is put on trial, convicted and sentenced to live in a witch camp in the desert.
I Think We’re Alone Now (Limited Release)
Peter Dinklage and Elle Fanning star in this science fiction movie set in a post-apocalyptic world that may (or may not) have many survivors. Despite the interesting possibilities of the movie’s premise, “I Think We’re Alone Now” has received mixed reviews.
Life Itself
“Life Itself” is about a couple “that lead a multigenerational love story spanning both decades and continents, from the streets of New York to the Spanish countryside, and are all connected by a single event,” according to Amazon Studios. The ensemble cast includes Oscar Isaac, Olivia Wilde, Antonio Banderas, Annette Bening, Olivia Cooke, Sergio Peris- Mencheta, Laia Costa, Alex Monner and Mandy Patinkin. Dan Fogelman (NBC series “This Is Us”) directs.
Lizzie (Limited Release)
“Lizzie” is based on the life of Lizzie Borden, who is generally believed to have murdered her father and stepmother with an ax in 1892, but was nonetheless tried and acquitted. The film stars Chloë Sevigny and Kristen Stewart. “Lizzie” has been Sevigny’s passion project since 2010. However, in a Huffington Post interview, Sevigny revealed that “Lizzie” was not the movie she had conceptualized.
Love, Gilda (Limited Release)
“Love, Gilda” is a heart-felt documentary of Gilda Radner, featuring the comedienne’s own diary-style audio tapes and commentary from both her contemporaries and the artists she inspired.
Mandy (Limited Release)
Nicolas Cage stars in this action horror film that is getting universally positive reviews. “Mandy” features supernatural creatures, lots of blood, and even a chainsaw fight, in what may be the goriest film of the year.
Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. (Limited Release)
Steve Loveridge directs this documentary about Sri Lankan/British rapper M.I.A. Drawing from M.I.A.’s personal video recordings from the past 22 years, the film covers her early life, activism, and the Super Bowl and New York Times magazine incidents.
My Son (Limited Release)
Guillaume Canet stars as an estranged father who searches for his son who has gone missing the woods of eastern France.
Night School
Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish star in this comedy about two men who attend night school in hopes of passing the GED exam.
The Nun
A gothic supernatural horror film directed by Corin Hardy, “The Nun” is the fifth installment in “The Conjuring” series. Demián Bichir stars as Father Burke, who travels to Romania to investigate the mysterious death of a nun.
The Old Man and The Gun (Limited Release)
Robert Redford, in what is reportedly his final film role, stars in this movie based on the true story of Forrest Tucker, a man who was in and out of jail since age 15. “The Old Man and The Gun” covers Tucker’s escape from San Quentin at age 70 through a string of bank robberies that he pulls off with panache. The cast also includes Casey Affleck, Sissy Spacek, Danny Glover, Tom Waits, and Tika Sumpter. Tucker was profiled in the New Yorker in 2003.
Patient Zero (Limited Release)
A group of scientists search for an antidote for a virus that turns infected humans into a ferocious but highly intelligent new species. At present there are no reviews of “Patient Zero.” However, the fact that it was filmed in 2015, scheduled for release in early 2017, but later pulled does not bode well. Starring Matt Smith, Natalie Dormer, Stanley Tucci, Agyness Deyn, and Clive Standen.
Peppermint
Jennifer Garner stars in this revenge action thriller from French director Pierre Morel (“Taken,” “District B13,” “96 Hours,” “From Paris with Love,” “The Gunman”). After her husband and daughter are gunned down by members of a drug cartel, Garner seeks her own rough justice.
The Predator
Shane Black directs this fourth installment in the Predator film series. The film stars Boyd Holbrook, Trevante Rhodes, Jacob Tremblay, Keegan-Michael Key, Olivia Munn, Sterling K. Brown, Thomas Jane, and Alfie Allen.
The Sisters Brothers (Limited Release)
John C. Reilly and Joaquin Phoenix star as two assassin brothers hired to track down a gold prospector who has stolen from their boss. Jake Gyllenhaal and Riz Ahmed co-star in this dark western comedy.
Smallfoot
A Yeti discovers something that his clan does not believe exists — a human. The “Smallfoot” trailer is hilarious and points to a deeper message along the lines of “The Good Dinosaur.”
White Boy Rick
Set in 1980s Detroit, “White Boy Rick” is a crime drama starring Richie Merritt as Richard Wershe, Jr., who gets involved in the cocaine industry and became the youngest FBI informant ever at the age of 14. Matthew McConaughey co-stars as Rick’s father.
