Summer 2019 Movie Releases: August

This list is as complete as possible, but any given movie’s release schedule is subject to change, and movies with limited release may not make it to Raleigh in August. Nonetheless, there are several limited release movies worth looking out for in the future on Netflix and other carriers.

47 Meters Down: Uncaged

In this survival horror film, four teenage girls diving in a ruined underwater city find themselves in a watery hell when they learn they are not alone in the submerged caves. As they swim deeper into the claustrophobic labyrinth of caves, they enter the territory of the deadliest shark species in the ocean.
“47 Meters Down: Uncaged” is the sequel to “47 Meters Down.”
Starring Sophie Nélisse, Corinne Foxx, Brianne Tju, Sistine Stallone, Davi Santos, Khylin Rhambo, Brec Bassinger, and John Corbett.

After the Wedding (Limited Release)

Isabel (Michelle Williams) has dedicated her life to working with the children in an orphanage in Calcutta. Theresa (Julianne Moore) is the multimillionaire head of a media company who lives with her artist husband (Billy Crudup) and their twin boys in New York. When word comes to Isabel of a mysterious and generous grant for the financially struggling orphanage, she must travel to New York to meet the benefactor—Theresa—in person.

“After the Wedding” is a gender-reversed remake of “Efter brylluppet,” a 2006 Danish drama nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.

Angel Has Fallen

When there is an assassination attempt on U.S. President Allan Trumbull (Morgan Freeman), his trusted confidant, Secret Service Agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler), is wrongfully accused and taken into custody. After escaping from capture, he becomes a man on the run and must evade his own agency and outsmart the FBI in order to find the real threat to the President. Desperate to uncover the truth, Banning turns to unlikely allies to help clear his name, keep his family from harm and save the country from imminent danger.
“Angel Has Fallen” is the third film in the Olympus Has Fallen film series, following “Olympus Has Fallen” (2013) and “London Has Fallen” (2016).

Aquarela (Limited Release)

AQUARELA takes audiences on a deeply cinematic journey through the transformative beauty and raw power of water. From the precarious frozen waters of Russia’s Lake Baikal to Miami in the throes of Hurricane Irma to Venezuela’s mighty Angel Falls, water is AQUARELA’s main character, with director Victor Kossakovsky capturing her many personalities in startling cinematic clarity.

Blinded By the Light

Brian Banks

“Brian Banks” tells the true story of an All-American high school football star committed to USC who loses everything when he is wrongly convicted of rape. Banks is sentenced to a decade of prison and probation. Years later, with the support of the California Innocence Project, Banks fights to reclaim his life and fulfill his dreams of playing in the NFL.

Brittany Runs a Marathon (Limited Release)

A New Yorker City slacker hangs up her hard-partying ways and trains to run the New York City Marathon. Starring Jillian Bell, Michaela Watkins, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Lil Rel Howery, and Micah Stock.

Cold Case Hammarskjöld (Limited Release)

“Cold Case Hammarskjöld” is a documentary by Danish filmmaker Mads Brügger. Brügger and his partner Göran Björkdahl investigate the unsolved 1961 Ndola United Nations DC-6 crash, which killed UN General Secretary Dag Hammarskjöld.

Don’t Let Go

“Don’t Let Go” is a supernatural thriller film starring David Oyelowo, Storm Reid, Byron Mann, Mykelti Williamson and Shinelle Azoroh.

Dora and the Lost City of Gold

“Dora and the Lost City of Gold” is a live-action adaptation of the Nickelodeon television series “Dora the Explorer.” It stars Isabela Moner as Dora, with Eugenio Derbez, Michael Peña, Eva Longoria, and Danny Trejo.

Driven (Limited Release)

Lee Pace stars as John DeLorean. Jason Sudeikis co-stars as DeLorean’s neighbor turned FBI informant who participates in an FBI sting operation that catches DeLorean agreeing to bankroll a cocaine smuggling operation.

End of the Century (Limited Release)

Two closeted gay men — an Argentinian aspiring poet from New York and a Spanish director from Berlin — hook up in Barcelona. The nonlinear narrative reveals that there is more than just what at first appears to be a single meeting.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

“Hobbs & Shaw” is a spin-off of The Fast and the Furious franchise . Starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby, and Helen Mirren.

Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles (Limited Release)

“Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles” is a documentary that tells the origin story behind “Fiddler on The Roof.” “Fiddler” includes interviews with lyricist Sheldon Harnick and producer Hal Prince, as well as Lin-Manuel Miranda, Joel Grey, Harvey Fierstein, and Danny Burstein.

Freaks (Limited Release)

“Freaks” is genre-bending psychological sci-fi thriller that tells the story of a 7-year-old girl who escapes from her paranoid father, who had kept her locked in an abandoned house. Starring Emile Hirsch, Bruce Dern, Grace Park, Amanda Crew, and Lexy Kolker.

Give Me Liberty (Limited Release)

“Give Me Liberty” is a comedy about a young Russian immigrant to Milwaukee who works as a medical transport driver for people with disabilities.

Good Boys

Three sixth-grade boys try to impress the older kids and girls at their school by skipping and attending parties. Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg produce.

Jacob’s Ladder (Limited Release)

Jacob Singer returns home from combat in Afghanistan and descends into a paranoid psychosis of a flashbacks and hallucinations. “Jacob’s Ladder” is a remake of the 1990 film of the same title, which was directed by Adrian Lyne and starred Tim Robbins.

Killerman

When NYC money launderer Moe Diamond wakes up from a car crash, he’s left with no memory, millions in stolen cash, and an insane crew of dirty cops hunting him down. With a stranger who says he’s his best friend and a fiancée he doesn’t remember, Moe must race against the clock to discover his own identity–and escape his past, before it destroys any chance at a future. Starring Liam Hemsworth.

Los Reyes

Love, Antosha (Limited Release)

“Love, Antosha” is a documentary about the late actor Anton Yelchin, his struggle with cystic fibrosis, and his acting career. Nicolas Cage narrates.

Luce (Limited Release)

Luce (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) is a model high school student athlete, who was from war-torn Eritrea by white parents (Naomi Watts and Tim Roth). Luce’s teacher (Octavia Spencer) begins to raise questions about him and may upend his reputation. Starring Naomi Watts, Octavia Spencer, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Norbert Leo Butz and Tim Roth.

Ode to Joy (Limited Release)

“Ode to Joy” tells the story of a man who suffers from cataplexy, which causes him to faint whenever he is overcome by strong emotions, especially happiness. He falls in love with a woman, but sets her up with his brother. Based on a true story originally featured on the radio show “This American Life.” Starring Martin Freeman, Morena Baccarin, Jake Lacy, and Jane Curtin.

Official Secrets (Limited Release)

“Official Secrets” is a political thriller that tells the real life story of Katharine Gun, who leaked a secret documents exposing an illegal US spy operation. Starring Keira Knightley, Matt Smith, Matthew Goode, Adam Bakri, Indira Varma, and Ralph Fiennes.

Otherhood (Limited Release)

Three mothers who show up to their sons’s homes unannounced. Starring Patricia Arquette, Angela Bassett, Felicity Huffman, Jake Hoffman, Sinqua Walls, and Jake Lacy.

Overcomer

Life changes overnight for coach John Harrison when his high school basketball team’s state championship dreams are crushed under the weight of unexpected news. When the largest manufacturing plant in town suddenly shuts down and hundreds of families begin moving away, John must come to grips with the challenges facing his family and his team.
