Georges Bizet

October 14 and 16, 2011

Memorial Auditorium, Progress Energy Center, Raleigh

Our season opens with Carmen, one of the most popular operas of all-time. Set in Spain, this riveting story tells the tale of a soldier with a past who is seduced by a gypsy woman who cares only about her own freedom. Les Enfants Terribles

Philip Glass

January 19, 20 and 22, 2012

Fletcher Opera Theater, Progress Energy Center, Raleigh

Sung in French with English supertitles

A brother and sister live in a fantasy world, a “game” of their own imagining. Friends from the outside world try to enter, and the harmless game turns into a fierce and tragic struggle. This beautiful and haunting piece is newly directed and choreographed by Robert Weiss, and features a quartet of young singers along with dancers from Carolina Ballet. We celebrate the 75th birthday of one of America’s most popular composers, whose work includes opera, symphony, ballet and film (The Hours, No Reservations, The Thin Blue Line, Kundun, among others).

Il Trovatore

Giuseppe Verdi

April 27, 2012 – Meymandi Concert Hall, Progress Energy Center, Raleigh

April 29, 2012 – Memorial Hall, Chapel Hill

Filled with ardent lovers, jealous rivals, and crazed gypsies, Il trovatore has everything we love about Italian opera – most of all its enormous wealth of great melodies, including the famous Anvil Chorus.
