Celebrating 20 years of music making, the award-winning Triangle Youth Brass Bands present their pre-competition concert, NABBA Showcase. The concert takes place at 3:00 pm on Sunday, February 26th. The venue is the auditorium at Meymandi Concert Hall, 2 E. South Street, Raleigh, NC.
The afternoon’s program features four groups – the senior-most band in the Youth Brass Band program is the Triangle Youth J. Perry Watson Brass Band, under the direction of Jesse Rackley, Artistic Director of the Youth Band program. The next band in the organization is the Triangle Youth Brass Band. This ensemble is directed by Mr. Matt Edwards, Director of Bands at Fuquay-Varina High School. Newly-formed in 2016, the organization is also proud to present the Triangle Youth Academy Brass Band, directed by Ms. Robin Gorham, Director of Bands at Fuquay-Varina Middle School. This concert is also this year’s debut performance by the TYBB Percussion Ensemble, directed by Mr. Ben Russell.
The concert program is focused on competition music, as all ensembles will be attending the NABBA (North American Brass Band Association) Championships, being held in Fort Wayne, Indiana in March. Featured soloists performing with the ensembles include Lauren Holtshauser, cornet, and Arnav Uppalapati and Mikayla Santos, euphoniums. Ms. Holtshauser, a senior at Athens Drive High School, performs the well-known Concert Etude by Alexander Goedicke. Mr. Uppalapati, a senior at Green Hope High School, and Ms. Santos, a senior at Cary High School, are featured on a duet version by David Werden of Simone Mantia’s classic showcase, Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms.
Ensemble works include Variations on Terra Beata, by James Curnow and The Dark Side of the Moon by Paul Lovatt-Cooper, presented by the Triangle Youth Academy Brass Band, and The Journal of Phileas Fogg, by Peter Graham and Holst’s Moorside Suite, presented by the Triangle Youth Brass Band. In addition to the solo and duet works, the Watson Brass Band presents Dimensions by Peter Graham, and closes the program with Turris Fortissima, by Steve Ponsford. Come hear some of the area’s finest young musicians get their competition mojo on!
