SUMMARY:0 to 60: The Experience of Time through Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION: \nMarch 24\, 2013 – August 11\, 2013 \n0 to 60: The Experience of Time through Contemporary Art\, co-organized by the NCMA and Penland School of Crafts\, highlights a current trend in contemporary art: exploring the intersection of time and art by artists who employ innovative and experimental techniques. \nThis collaborative\, multimedia exhibition is on view simultaneously at both sites\, featuring a major exhibition and outdoor installations at the NCMA and a series of artist residencies and installations at Penland\, accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue that covers the projects at Penland and the NCMA. Focusing on the concept of time and its influence on art\, the exhibition looks at how time is used as form\, content\, and material in art\, and how art is used to represent\, evoke\, manipulate\, or transform time. Featuring artists who ignore the traditional boundaries among art\, craft\, and design\, the exhibition presents 60 works of art by 32 international artists\, including Walead Beshty\, Paul Chan\, Tara Donovan\, Tim Hawkinson\, Felix Gonzalez-Torres\, Lisa Hoke\, Beth Lipman\, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer\, Jennifer Steinkamp\, Do Ho Suh\, Vera Lutter\, Bill Viola\, Stacy Lynn Waddell\, and many others.

SUMMARY:Indigo Girls at NCMA Park Theater
DESCRIPTION:The Indigo Girls will play the NC Museum of Art Park Theater on Saturday\, June 29 at 8 pm. \nRevered musicians and activists Amy Ray and Emily Saliers met in elementary school outside Atlanta and began performing together as the B-Band in high school. The two made their first recordings as the Indigo Girls in 1985 and have gone on to sell more than 12 million albums. The duo gained traction in the late 1980s at a time when women folk singers and songwriters were on the ascendency\, but Amy and Emily had a staying power that eluded many of their contemporaries. Their breakthrough album for Epic Records\, Indigo Girls (1989)\, featured a guest vocal from R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe\, won the Grammy for Best Folk Recording\, and eventually went platinum. Their 14th studio album\, Beauty Queen Sister\, finds them in “top traditional form\,” says All Music Guide. \n“Countless trends have come and gone\, but the popularity of the Indigo Girls has barely waned since the late ’80s\,” says David Dye\, host of the NPR music program World Café. “The duo’s sweet-and-sour folk music is just as heavily influenced by rock and world music as it is by the likes of Joni Mitchell.” \nThe Shadowboxers open. \nIndigo Girls Ticket Information\n$40 ($35 Members) Reserved\n$27 ($22 Members) General admission\n$13.50 Ages 7–18\, General admission only\nChildren 6 and under free\, General admission only \nBuy Tickets.
