SUMMARY:0 to 60: The Experience of Time through Contemporary Art
DESCRIPTION: \nMarch 24\, 2013 – August 11\, 2013 \n0 to 60: The Experience of Time through Contemporary Art\, co-organized by the NCMA and Penland School of Crafts\, highlights a current trend in contemporary art: exploring the intersection of time and art by artists who employ innovative and experimental techniques. \nThis collaborative\, multimedia exhibition is on view simultaneously at both sites\, featuring a major exhibition and outdoor installations at the NCMA and a series of artist residencies and installations at Penland\, accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue that covers the projects at Penland and the NCMA. Focusing on the concept of time and its influence on art\, the exhibition looks at how time is used as form\, content\, and material in art\, and how art is used to represent\, evoke\, manipulate\, or transform time. Featuring artists who ignore the traditional boundaries among art\, craft\, and design\, the exhibition presents 60 works of art by 32 international artists\, including Walead Beshty\, Paul Chan\, Tara Donovan\, Tim Hawkinson\, Felix Gonzalez-Torres\, Lisa Hoke\, Beth Lipman\, Rafael Lozano-Hemmer\, Jennifer Steinkamp\, Do Ho Suh\, Vera Lutter\, Bill Viola\, Stacy Lynn Waddell\, and many others.

SUMMARY:Drop Off Expired or Unneeded Medications
DESCRIPTION:Anyone with unneeded or expired medication may drop it off for safe disposal at a Prescription Pill Drop-Off Event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday\, May 18\, outside four Raleigh stores. The City of Raleigh Substance Abuse Advisory Commission and the City’s Police\, Community Services and Public Utilities departments are sponsoring the free event to help prevent the abuse of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. The event also helps keep medications out of the water system. \nThe event will take place outside these locations: \n\nJosef’s Pharmacy at 2100 New Bern Ave.;\nFood Lion at 4510 Capital Blvd. at the Mini City shopping area;\nFood Lion at 5633 Creedmoor Road at the intersection with Millbrook Road; and\,\nFood Lion at 2420 Wycliff Road at the intersection with Lake Boone Trail.\n\nMany people who abuse prescription drugs get them from unsuspecting family and friends. The Prescription Pill Drop-Off Event will help keep drugs away from those who might abuse them. It also provides a safe alternative to flushing unneeded or expired medication\, which could taint water supplies.\nMarkers will be available at the event to black out personal information on prescription labels. \nThe City of Raleigh Substance Abuse Advisory Commission advocates for the prevention and treatment of alcohol\, tobacco and drug abuse. Its members are volunteers appointed by the Raleigh City Council.

Tour Tickets are available at the following locations on the day of the tour or may be purchased here with a credit card. \nCheck out photos from the 2012 tour on Facebook. \nThe Tour D’Coop is a one-day garden tour in Raleigh\, North Carolina\, that seeks to educate visitors about keeping hens and delight them with garden ideas and inspiration. Open to adults and children\, the tour showcases various hen houses and breeds. Coop owners are on hand at each location to discuss the how-tos of chicken keeping and there are opportunities for photographing and getting to know the chickens. The wide variety of coop styles as well as the surrounding back yard gardens make the tour interesting for the whole family. \nPlease leave pets and companion animals at home; many hens are not accustomed to dogs. \nTour participants should bring a city map if they do not own a GPS system. The tour tickets only provide the coops’ addresses and basic directions.

SUMMARY:NCMA Chamber Music: Gems from the Golden Age
DESCRIPTION:Sights and Sounds on Sundays Presented by the NCMA and Raleigh Chamber Music Guild \nSunday\, May 19 | 3 pm\nMuseum Auditorium\, East Building\n$10 Museum members\, students\n$12 Nonmembers \nFrances Blaker\, recorders; David Wilson\, baroque violin; Barbara Krumdieck\, baroque cello; William Simms\, theorbo and baroque guitar; Jennifer Streeter\, harpsichord \nEnsemble Vermillian is prized for its vivid interpretations of baroque-era music\, performed with period instruments. A recent review notes that the group’s music is “so graceful and well recorded that listening to it is nearly a visual experience.” \nThe ensemble has crafted a thoughtful program that offers deep insights into four masterpieces from the Museum’s collection: Bernardo Strozzi’s Portrait of a Gentleman (circa 1625)\, Guido Reni’s Madonna and Child (circa 1628)\, and Rubens and workshop’s The Bear Hunt (1639) and The Holy Family with Saint Anne (circa 1630). Strozzi in fact painted the portrait of featured composer Claudio Monteverdi. \nSights and Sounds on Sundays is funded\, in part\, by the City of Raleigh\, based on recommendations of the Raleigh Arts Commission; and by the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County\, with funds from the United Arts Campaign; as well as by the North Carolina Arts Council\, a division of the Department of Cultural Resources.
