Amélie, the 2001 French romantic comedy, plays at the Colony on February 20, 2013 at 7:30pm.
Amélie tells the story of a shy young woman, played by Audrey Tautou, who decides to improve the lives of her neighbors and her father who has become increasingly reclusive. She goes about this in secret, devising all sorts of schemes to help everyone, and in one particular case, teach a bully a lesson. This being a romantic comedy set in Paris, Amélie’s adventures eventually lead her to cross paths with a young man.
Amélie is directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who had previously directed The City of Children and Alien Resurrection. Amélie is memorable for its fanciful story and its visuals. Jeunet very subtly integrates special effects into this romantic comedy. Amélie is also notable for for the gnome sensation that it triggered.
Amélie is part of the Cool Classics at the Colony series, running the third Wednesday of every month.
