A remarkable documentary explores the inner life of Dr. Lucy Daniels, whose childhood has both tormented and motivated her throughout her life. Born into a prominent Raleigh newspaper family, Daniels suffered from severe anorexia and endured brutal treatment at mental hospitals far from home. But by age 22 she had written a best-selling book and won a Guggenheim Fellowship. In 1989 she founded the Lucy Daniels Center, the largest and most comprehensive nonprofit provider of mental health services exclusively for children in the Triangle region.
Filmmaker Elisabeth Haviland James employs imagined narrative, constructed dream sequences, intimate interviews, and Daniels’s own writing to bring a harrowing survival story to the screen.
Daniels and James will discuss the film project after the screening.
