My visit to Pie Bird was very good. I tried the pimento cheese and spinach with feta hand pies ($3 each). I added carrot soup as a side. The crust was buttery and fantastic. The pimento cheese pie was creamy and had just enough bite. The spinach/feta pie was heavy on the spinach, but savory and delicious. The carrot soup was well-seasoned: cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger would be my best guess.
For dessert, I tried both the key lime and chocolate pies. Both were very good. Again, the crusts were great.
With dessert, I had Counter Culture coffee, which was excellent and was served in a French press. Everyone seems to be jumping on the Starbucks bandwagon these days, featuring their own particular gourmet blend of drip coffee. The French press was a nice touch. More importantly, the coffee was very bold and flavorful.
The main dining room features a long row of tables. My wife, little boy and I were seated in the back, which also featured a little “living room.”
Finally, kudos to our server, John, who really hustled and appeared to be both a host as well as tending to us way in the back.
