Claude Debussy’s iconic La Mer, with all the dynamic energy and imagery of the sea, serves as the latest musical inspiration for Choreographer in Residence Zalman Raffael. Debussy created La Mer as three “symphonic sketches” to evoke the essence of the ocean and now Raffael will bring them to life with the color of Neptune’s majesty.
DON QUIXOTE, OCTOBER 13-30, 2016

Scenes of love and battles with windmills have filled our hearts with humor and pathos since 1605 when Cervantes first set forth his tarnished knight, Don Quixote, into the world along with his loyal sidekick Sancho Panza. Robert Weiss finished his quest to tell this centuries old tale in 2008 when the News and Observer dubbed it “one of his very best creations, a huge crowd pleaser.” Don Quixote is imagination come to life. This production commemorates the 400th anniversary of Cervantes’ death in 1616.

Lynne Taylor Corbett’s Carmina Burana, with live music by the North Carolina Master Chorale under the baton of Alfred E. Sturgis, was hailed by the News and Observer as “wonderful theater, performed by a troupe with surprising artistic depth.” The ballet explores love, greed and obsession to Carl Orff’s pulsating score as the wheel of fortune spins in the contemporary setting of Wall Street.

Join us under the sea as Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, The Little Mermaid, is brought to life in this “large-scale, visually dazzling piece” according to the News and Observer. Lynne Taylor-Corbett conjures an enchanting vision of a young mermaid with the dulcet voice, who will risk it all for love in a daring deal with a vengeful sea witch; all crafted to an original score by Michael Moricz. In addition, we present George Balanchine’s elegant Who Cares?, set to George Gershwin Hollywood favorites.

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons, Robert Weiss’ celebration of nature’s enduring cycle, will “burst forth with shocking vividness, teeming with undeniable life force…It’s thrumming, interlocked motion making a powerful engine for dance,” according to Indy Week. George Gershwin’s epic American masterwork Rhapsody in Blue will transport you to a world envisioned by Carolina Ballet’s Choreographer in Residence, Zalman Raffael, as he explores Gershwin’s ever-changing rhythms and moods in his deftly sensitive ballet; Rhapsody. Originally created as a studio work, Rhapsody had its stage premiere in the Fletcher Theater in 2013. This season Raffael will reimagine this work as it graces Raleigh’s largest stage, and answers the call of this American classic.
